Only those trained will be able to participate as legal observers

Sponsored by Peaceful Uprising and the National Lawyers Guild of Utah. The National Lawyers Guild is an organization of progressive attorneys and legal workers of all kinds (paralegals, secretaries, office managers, clerks and so on) that has been continuously active for 75 years. Its mission is: “Using the law to attain social justice and protect human rights above property interests.” The NLG is the backbone of the legal support system for causes that fall within that mission. They have been unflinchingly supporting the non-violent direct action of the climate justice movement and the Occupy movement.
Legal Observer Program The National Lawyers Guild Legal Observer® program was established in 1968 in New York City in response to protests at Columbia University and city-wide antiwar and civil rights demonstrations. That same year, Guild students organized for the defense of people swept up in mass arrests at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The Legal Observer® program is part of a comprehensive system of legal support designed to enable people to express their political views as fully as possible without unconstitutional disruption or interference by the police and with the fewest possible consequences from the criminal justice system. The presence of Legal Observers® may serve as a deterrent to unconstitutional behavior by law enforcement during a demonstration.
