This just keeps getting bigger.
Josh Fox, creator of the award-winning film “Gasland“, has created a moving and informative new video about the Tar Sands Action in Washington DC. He joins a growing list of concerned scientists, authors, and celebrities (Thom Yorke of Radiohead and Mark Ruffalo, for example) who have voiced their support the 2000+ people who have signed up to take action.
Beginning August 20th, and continuing day after day until Sept. 3, citizens from all over the country will gather in front of the White House and participate in the time-honored tactic of peaceful civil disobedience. Why? Because President Obama has the ultimate authority to sign or not sign the authorization of the Keystone XL Pipeline, that would run from Alberta, Canada to oil refineries in Texas. This would allow oil companies to increase their operations in Alberta, ultimately unleashing enough new carbon into the atmosphere to spell “game over for the climate.” (NASA scientist, Dr. James Hansen.)
Please visit the independent Tar Sands Action site, where you can sign up, support the action, sign a petition, and help spread the word.

Thank you, I’ve recently been looking for information about this subject for a while and yours is the greatest I’ve found out so far. But, what in regards to the bottom line? Are you sure in regards to the supply?|What i do not understood is in reality how you’re not really a lot more smartly-liked than you might be right now. You are so intelligent.
I suggest writing a comment on the White House comment web site stating that you will not vote for Obama in 2012 if he ok’s the XL pipeline. I’ve already done so, and I felt better after doing it. Its not enough, of course, but its a good place to start.
OMG I wish ppl would get off their high horse! Its called the tar sands – they are big TAR PITS. What the oil plants do is scrape the tar off then replace the dirt/sand and plant trees, making it better for the animals. Yes, they dig deep so it looks scary, but If any environmentalists wanna save the tarsands – go live in it! Go build your house in the sticky tar that you can literally scoop off the ground.
Are you serious? I hope this is an poorly executed attempt at satire. If not please excuse yourself from the gene pool.
Check the before and after pictures. Check scientists who are not working for the oil companies. It is every bit as much a disaster as people are painting.
Oh…Julie…Your comment is just so disturbingly misinformed.
When one is given the facts on the role that fossil fuels play in global warming it is disconcerting to think that all projections for oil consumption lead to the same conclusion. Namely up up and away. It’s a wonder why we don’t just combine the two most common platitudes, i.e. “global warming” and “climate change”, into a more inclusive one: “Environmental Holocaust”. This would be a much better description of the situation. Calling it an “Environmental Holocaust” might help people to conceptualize the seriousness of the current environmental situation confronting this and coming generations. We are allowing a Holocaust to happen just as the German people did. We feel powerless to stop the machine operating on our behalf with us as its justification. We do not know the extent of the destruction, for how could we. The effects of the machine are hidden just as the effects of the German Holocaust were hidden from the German people. The victims of this holocaust presently are not human minorities in a fascist state but non human entities, animals, eco-systems, forests, oceans and ultimately the human species.
Where is the coverage? Have the oil companies brought all the media as well? If this goes through to completion several scientists say the CO2 level, needed to remain at 350 and already at 391, will go to 600.
Obama has been in many ways worse than Bush on the environment. See http://newprogs.org/blog/2011/06/18/bush-better-environmentalist-obama See also “Shall we put on a Pudding Face for environmentalism?” at http://newprogs.org/blog/2011/07/08/whos-wearing-pudding-face
If Obama (And it is his decision alone!) goes ahead with this, will we have enough courage to oppose him or just bow down and just say he is the lesser of two evils? This is the only planet we have and this may be our last best chance to save it.
