Volunteer with PeaceUp!

We need your help to GROW our beloved community, further the goal of climate justice,
and DEFEND a livable future!

The following volunteer positions are OPEN, and we need to fill them as soon as possible.

Volunteering in one of these roles will provide an amazing experience in community organizing,
and we’ll be filled with gratitude for your efforts.

Art Specialist

  • Act as a consultant, suggesting ways that art can complement PeaceUp’s efforts.
  • Produce eye-catching flyers and educational materials.
  • Take initiative to host art nights for the PeaceUp community.
  • Freedom to pursue any personally-designed projects that support PeaceUp’s needs.

Bold School Publicist

  • Promote PeaceUp’s Bold School by setting up radio and community paper public service announcements.
  • Develop outreach plan for Bold School, coordinating efforts with PeaceUp’s tar sands campaign outreach team.
  • Make short presentations to groups about Bold School.
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of climate justice from PeaceUp’s rad Bold School coordinator, Rebecca Hall, by working closely with her to develop promotional materials.

Bold School Logistics Coordinator

  • Find and book venues for Bold School.
  • Handle other logistical needs, like figuring out who is bringing food.

Coalition Builder

  • Reach out to our allies to find out what they’re doing and what support we might be able to lend.
  • Invite them to upcoming events like community discussion nights and picnics.
  • Attend their events to get connected in with what they’re doing and give support.
  • This is a role that most of us sort of do naturally, but we can use more help in reaching out to groups we’re not already closely involved with, and strengthening existing connections!

University Outreach Coordinator

  • Reach out to professors and school groups who may be interested in working with us.
  • Arrange times for PeaceUp folks to speak with classes and student groups.
  • Do school presentations for these classes and groups, or find other PeaceUp folks who can do them.
  • Propose service learning projects with PeaceUp tailored to specific classes and groups.
  • Send thank-you’s and follow up on ways to continue working together.

Community Events Coordinator

  • Plan fun social events, like picnics and film nights, with support from Leadership and other interested folks.
  • Try to organize at least one fun event a month where the broader PeaceUp community has a chance to just hang out together!
  • Get the word out to the broader community by creating and sharing a Facebook event, sending invites to PeaceUp Core via email, and making personal phone calls to our allies.

Phone Banking Coordinator

  • Plan phone banking nights to invite PeaceUp Core folks out to upcoming events, ask them to get involved, and ask them about their interests.
  • Find a location to hold the phone bank. (We have suggestions.)
  • Prepare a script for participants that gives folks ways to get involved.
  • Organize roughly one phone bank per month.
  • If time allows, find food donations for the phone banking night.

Canvass Leader: Rose Park

  • Lead canvassing efforts in the Rose Park community to invite people to events and find folks who are interested in working on the tar sands campaign. This will probably involve at least one canvass per month.
  • Coordinate canvasses by preparing maps of neighborhoods, tracking who’s been visited already, bringing flyers and other materials, etc.
  • Schedule canvasses for opportune times, leading up to community discussion nights or other events.
  • Give contact info from people canvassed to PeaceUp staff or outreach team leaders.

Canvass Leader: Poplar Grove

  • Lead canvassing efforts in the Poplar Grove community to invite people to events and find folks who are interested in working on the tar sands campaign. This will probably involve at least one canvass per month.
  • Coordinate canvasses by preparing maps of neighborhoods, tracking who’s been visited already, bringing flyers and other materials, etc.
  • Schedule canvasses for opportune times, leading up to community discussion nights or other events.
  • Give contact info from people canvassed to PeaceUp staff or outreach team leaders.

Community Discussion Facilitator

  • Lead, or co-lead, presentations about tar sands and air quality at community libraries or for various groups.
  • Find venues to lead presentations at, like branch libraries, schools, churches, or other community centers.
  • Work with outreach team to plan canvassing and flyering efforts.

Spanish Translator

  • Translate trainers’ words in real time during Bold School sessions and other presentations.
  • Translate written materials like flyers and PowerPoint presentations into Spanish.

ASL Signer

  • Sign in real time during Bold School sessions and other presentations.

Research Specialist

  • Ask PeaceUp Leadership about current research needs, or determine where gaps exist.
  • Conduct research on these topics, and communicate it with those who requested or might need the info.

Tar Sands Campaign Publicist

  • Send media tips and press releases to press outlets.
  • Coordinate radio spots for PeaceUp folks.
  • Work to promote events via community calendars and other venues.
  • Write press releases (in collaboration with others, if necessary).

Special Media Projects Producer

  • Create videos, memes, photos, or blogs for PeaceUp about climate justice and/or tar sands.
  • Document events and help produce media from them.
  • Coordinate efforts with other folks on the Special Media Projects team.

Welcome Wagon Team

  • Have one-on-one meetings with folks who are new to PeaceUp, ideally getting together with them for coffee so you can talk in person.
  • Explain what PeaceUp does, what climate justice is, and what’s happening with the tar sands campaign.
  • Tell them about ways to get involved, like specific upcoming events, and ask them about their interests.
  • Connect them with others working on projects that meet their interests.
