Call for Solidarity: Deep Roots United Front Gathering

Over the past couple of years, Peaceful Uprising has been exploring and shifting the ways in which we organize ourselves moving to a more collective-based model, in which we carry out the work that we do, and in how we express and honor solidarity to those on the frontlines of struggle. Recently, this has included a new mechanism — a solidarity fund by which we set aside money on a monthly basis. These funds will cover costs such as travel expenses, food, material and supply needs, as well as stipends for frontline organizers.

In a week, our friends from Deep Roots United Front will be holding their first gathering, for which they’ve invited frontline, indigenous and organizers of color from all over so-called North America. They are a nascent collective, their aim being to take action as solidarity to those on the frontlines while creating space for healing and survival programs for our communities. As organizers of color, they are working collectively to elevate those voices who’ve been marginalized, as well as taking leadership from those whose history is one of resistance and resilience to the forces of capitalism, colonization, militarism, and genocide. They have chosen this month to gather, to honor the Oglala Lakota Nation’s Liberation Day on February 27th, which marks the anniversary of the take-over of Wounded Knee.

Some of the comrades will be travelling far, and with limited resources to do so — and need some support to cover travel expenses and food costs for the several dozen participants that will be coming together to strategize, share stories & best practices, and celebrate with their generous hosts.

Could you make a donation today to our solidarity fund? Remember, this is not charity we’re asking for, but solidarity by getting material resources to those who need it most.

Deep Roots Unite Front’s mission statement is as follows…

As people of color we recognize that the lethal dominant culture is waging war on all life, destroying cultures, traditions, stories, and communities deeply rooted in the Earth. Through the colonization of our minds, bodies, and spirits, we have continuously been stripped of our lands and inflicted with violence and poverty.

Our liberation will not come through politicians, political parties, or governments. No one will come and rescue us. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. Holding the wisdom of our ancestors, our people have survived centuries of oppression through daily acts of resistance. Now is the time to reclaim those stories. Time to end the conflicts that plague our communities, and join together in mutual struggle for liberation.

We will take action to protect the land and her children. We will support and participate in creating survival programs to increase the resilience and autonomy of our communities.
