Hey kids, want to fight climate change? Want to create a future that you can…live in? If so, progressive think-tanks like Americans for Energy Leadership want you to shut the hell up about what you want.
Are you a climate activist or a Democratic apologist?
I’ve always found “messaging strategy” to be a code word for “cowardly disingenuousness”, but I let it slide. Not this time. The “thinkers” are now posting their blindly pro-Obama propaganda on It’s Getting Hot In Here, and it hits a nerve.
Here’s their brilliant rationale for avoiding the word “climate” in our climate activism: “Republicans are using it against us–so, (here’s the brilliant part) we’ll use a different word! They won’t even notice! See, if we call for economic competitiveness, national security, and talk more about public health instead, then the Republicans won’t even see us coming. Pretty soon, POW! We have averted climate catastrophe. If you don’t support this, then you obviously don’t care about the billions living in poverty. You don’t hate poor people, do you?”
It’s total bullshit. Don’t listen to them.
They get paid to tow the President’s line–the same president who hid from you on climate change legislation after you got him elected. Remember that?
The Republican party will tear apart and tear down anything that the progressives say or do, especially if what they are intending to do is keep carbon in the ground. By playing defense like this–by selling out completely in order to please a few Republicans–we only achieve…nothing. Because anything less than a total revolution in energy production is deadly failure. I hate that fact too, but you know it’s true. We won’t get that through compromise, we’ll get it by sticking to our guns and demanding it until we get it.
What if gay rights activists had been told to avoid any talk of homosexuality, because it offended some Republicans. What if Women were told that they ought to stop mentioning their gender when they talk about justice?
Democrats had the House and Senate and Presidency for two whole years, failed miserably on climate, now they want you to listen to them because “if we can just get the House back, then we will save the world. We promise.” Psh!
These people are desperately trying to uphold the same unjust status quo that got us here in the first place. They don’t care about the climate, they care about getting Democrats elected. No wonder its so easy for them to ask us to change the name of our movement.
The Republicans will not support anything that will achieve a livable climate. What is the point of selling out your central message if it won’t help? I’ll tell you. Its called “supporting the president.” I don’t know about you, but if I have to choose between supporting a temporary president and fighting for my future in an honest way, I say we have the wrong president.
We are being asked to lose dishonestly, when we could lose with our integrity. I say a day will come when that same integrity will be the one thing that puts us over the top.
I am a goddamn climate justice activist, and unlike these professional apologists, I believe in what I do.
